Dr Spender worked as an NHS Consultant Psychiatrist from 1995 until 2018, including: seven years as a Consultant in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry in Wolverhampton; and 11 years in Chichester, during which he was also a Senior Lecturer at St George’s Medical School (London). He is also a fully qualified Family Therapist. He is registered under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act.
He has completed a variety of Expert Witness reports in the past, mainly from 1993 to 2007, the number per year ranging from three to ten. The frequency of his reports decreased between 2007 amd 2018, as he was focused on clinical work.
Dr Spender's most recent reports concern Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and the relevance of mental health disorders to criminal actions. Previously, his specialist interest was in complex child protection cases, for a variety of Courts, including the Family Court and the High Court, usually funded by Legal Aid. For these commissions, he took on the role of Single Joint Expert, and was usually instructed by the Solicitor representing the Guardian-ad-Litem for the children involved; and on a few occasions by the Official Solicitor.
He is experienced at doing thorough medico-legal assessments. In addition to Paediatric Liaison Psychiatry, Family Therapy, ADHD and Conduct Disorder, his clinical interests include Depression, Self-Harm, PTSD and ASD.
