Dr. Muhammad Altaf
Biography
Dr Muhammad Altaf is a Locum Consultant Psychiatrist with 24 years of diverse experience across both training and non-training medical and psychiatric roles since qualifying with his MBBS. He has comprehensive expertise in intellectual disability psychiatry, forensic high-secure settings, general adult psychiatry, severe and complex personality disorders, and substance misuse. He is currently a Locum Consultant Psychiatrist in the Adult Neurodevelopmental Services at Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Derbyshire Community Health Services Trust, where he provides clinical leadership to community learning disability and intensive support teams.
Dr Altaf has extensive experience managing complex psychiatric cases in high-secure facilities and conducting expert psychiatric assessments for legal and clinical purposes. He has worked as a Specialty Doctor at Rampton Hospital, one of the UK’s leading high-secure forensic hospitals, where he gained specialist expertise in forensic psychiatry, high-secure learning disability services, and personality disorder management. His clinical work also includes acute inpatient psychiatry, substance misuse rehabilitation, cognitive assessments, and capacity evaluations. He is psychoanalytically informed and regularly attends courses and seminars at the Institute of Psychoanalysis.
As a medicolegal expert, Dr Altaf has conducted psychiatric assessments in cases involving mental health tribunals, capacity evaluations, and forensic risk assessments. His expertise extends to autism spectrum disorder (ASD), cognitive impairment, psychosis, mood disorders, and PTSD, making him well-equipped to provide specialist reports for legal proceedings in both criminal and civil cases.
